Use of Social Media and ICT
Research within this theme will concentrate on child and youth participation through the lens of social media. Taking into consideration the different levels of social media penetration, we will use this and other media to better understand the benefits and challenges children and adolescents face.
While North American literature shows adolescents use social media mostly for entertainment and relatively rarely for civic participation (Park & Calamaro, 2013), social media participation does increase when “linked to the local territory and its activities” (D’ambrosi & Massoli, 2012, p. 530).
Most of the Latin America research on children and youth social media use relates to marketing and little research has been done on human rights and participation (Bringue et. al., 2011). To increase knowledge within all identified regions, we will use surveys, focus groups, community meetings, and content analysis of local social media.
